Most people on the AirRaidSirens.com board and troughout the entire siren community are dissapointed that Federal Signal makes such high-pitched sirens, particularily with Federal's new 2001 series. Yes it is annoying to hear such a high-pitched siren, meaning that a lower-tone siren is much more pleasing to hear. So what makes Federal Signal make such high-pitched sirens? It's not the fact that they want to pierce your years with their sound, but what they rather want is efficiency. Most of you here are probably scratching your heads on how this principle works. Well today the distance that the sound travels trough is very important as you need lots of coverage. Consequently, sound distance is not the only thing siren companies are betting on today. Annother thing to consider would be higher sound pressure as you need a loud warning tone. Unfortunately you cannot achieve a high sound pressure with a lower pitch. A lower pitch is good for those long distances because the sound waves produced are longer themselves and the lower the pitch is, therefore the sound travels longer distances and those longer distances are sounded with less energy from the motor. But because longer waves are longer, their energy is over-distributed. What you do want for a higher sound pressure is a sound wave type which is very compressed. Yes a higher pitch is the way to produce that without taking away those extra horsepower from the motor. Naturally if you want higher sound pressure and longer distance you would need lots of power and air to go into that rotor. With a higher pitch you let the characteristics of the wave do most of the work for you. So if you ever get annoyed by that famous high pitch from most Federal Signal products, you can atleast be assured that if a tornado threatens to kill you and your family, you will get a stronger warning signal. So maybe it is time we stop criticizing the 2001 series' high pitch and thank Federal Signal for all the lives it saved due to a louder signal.
