Mechanical/electromechanical siren signals:

Wail or attack signal- is a slowly rising and falling tone. It is mostly used as a signal to urge citizens to take cover immediately. This usually includes raids, attacks, bomb explosions, chemical disasters and other such ocasions involving immediate cover.

Alert signal- is a steady signal, and is used to alert people to turn to their nearest source(s) of media as there is still furthermore to be know about the possible danger. Also,because it is an alert signal, that means it warns people to take caution as the danger is only a possibility at this moment, but precautions should be taken. Such signal is used for severe-storm watches and other situations where danger to the public is a possibility.

Hi Lo signal- is a sharply alternating signal of a low frequency going up into a high frequency, than falling back into low, back to high, ect. This sort of signal is used to alert emergency personell stations that there is an accident, like a house fire, to move into action.

Whoop signal- a signal in which the sound steadily rises up then cuts off. This takes about three secconds. Then it does that again, and again untill the warning is over.

Inverted whoop signal- same concept as the original whoop signal, only this time the frequency, instead of rising, falls and than cuts off.

NOTE: some of the signals electronic sirens perform might actually be different versions of some signals that the electro-/mechanical sirens produce! This varies between most community's standards. Also, this signal information is from the U.S.A. standards. Also, wail and alert signals are the one of the most general, and are recognized by a number of nations.
